I’ve seen so many gorgeous fondant frill cakes all over the internet and had dreamed for an opportunity to make one someday; They’re so delicate, elegant and pretty. So when my husband’s coworker asked for a cake and gave me free reign on the design, I knew exactly what I was going to make – one of Maggie Austin’s Frill Cakes! I didn’t have a clue on the technique to recreate one of her cakes and I had never made a gumpaste rose before either. What was I going to do? I was short on time and what better way to learn than from the master who created the technique in the first place, Maggie Austin. I signed up immediately for Crafty’s online cake decorating coarse called, Fondant Frills with Maggie Austin and dove right in. During the middle of the night when the rest of the house was quiet and asleep, I propped up my tablet on the table in front to me and watched the Craftsy course as I worked along side with the video.
Craftsy offers online crafting classes, taught by world renowned instructors. They have numerous classes on different techniques and step by step tutorials on cake decorating – so many awesome classes to choose from! I love the convenience of being able to take a class on my schedule (which is pretty much in the middle of the night) and you can bookmark your favorite moments in the video to refer back to later. You can watch these over and over again, pause, rewind, and even take notes on there. Instructors are also available for questions which you get personalized responses on and you can participate in discussions with other classmates and see a portfolio of their creations – an entire support system to help you learn.
Now, I can recreate one of her cakes and on top of it all, make a cabbage rose too. I can’t wait for another opportunity to make another one of Maggie Austin’s Fondant Frill cakes!
